New Case Study: CSUN's Lilac Hall: 28% Less Electricity, 64% Less Gas
We've just published an updated case study on our Lilac Hall deployment at Cal State Northridge, and the numbers keep getting better. The 10,000-square-foot facility, already equipped with networked lighting controls and a BACnet-enabled BMS, saw a 28% reduction in total building electricity and a 64% reduction in natural gas use after KenergyAI went live, no construction, no new hardware, no changes to BMS sequences.
That adds up to a payback period of roughly three months. The project also avoids close to 26 metric tons of CO2e annually, roughly 3.6 tons from the electricity savings and 22.3 tons from the natural gas savings, supporting CSUN's broader decarbonization goals.
The results reinforce what we've seen across our campus deployments: occupancy-based HVAC optimization can deliver fast, measurable savings purely through software, with facilities staff retaining full visibility and override control throughout.

UC Davis CLTC Seminar: HVAC+Lighting Integration
Learn how to unlock 35%+ HVAC energy savings with HVAC+lighting integration. No construction. No operational changes.
What you will learn
→ How real-time occupancy data drives automatic HVAC optimization without new hardware or programming changes
→ Why this approach delivers deeper savings than static schedules while avoiding comfort complaints and while facilities teams stay in complete control
→ Case studies from university and commercial buildings.
KenergyAI turns infrastructure you already have into measurable HVAC energy reductions, peak demand relief, and progress toward sustainability targets.

Classroom Schedule + HVAC Integration: Now Live at CSUN Maple Hall
KenergyAI's new Classroom Schedule + HVAC Integration software is live at Cal State Northridge's Maple Hall. It connects to a building's existing scheduling system so HVAC adjusts around planned activities, not just fixed timers or real-time occupancy, widening deadbands when a space is booked but empty, then pre-conditioning ahead of the next event so occupants walk into a comfortable room. Special thanks to Austin Eriksson for originating the idea and leading the build.
It's software-only, so it works with anything from full BACnet-enabled BMS to standalone smart thermostats, no hardware upgrades, no changes to control sequences. If your classrooms, conference rooms, or auditoriums run on predictable schedules, reach out and we'll walk you through what it could look like in your buildings. |
Recap: CSU Chancellor's Office Lunch & Learn
On June 23, KenergyAI CEO John Ko presented to universities and colleges from across the CSU system, walking through how the software connects networked lighting controls and occupancy sensors directly to existing BMS platforms over BACnet. No hardware changes. No BMS reprogramming.
Two campuses already running the software show what that looks like in practice, and a third piece of the picture (how a project gets started) is what usually turns interest into a signed project. |
Cal State Dominguez Hills. The CalNEXT study measured 36% HVAC energy savings and a 50% peak demand reduction, independently validated, not self-reported. |

CSUN's Lilac Hall. Total building electricity dropped 28% and natural gas use fell 64%, with zero hardware added to the building. |

No capital project, no construction. John covered how a project gets started with no capital project and no construction. |
