Lighting + Thermostat is Finally Becoming Practical
For over twenty years, the industry has talked about linking lighting occupancy data to HVAC systems. The logic is simple: don't condition an empty room. Larger buildings with management systems have made gradual progress, but smaller, thermostat-driven buildings have lagged behind, until now.
New software platforms are connecting networked lighting controls or standalone occupancy sensors directly to smart thermostats, cutting unnecessary runtime while preserving comfort when spaces are occupied. KenergyAI's Occupancy Based Thermostat Control is one of them, using AI to interpret occupancy patterns and adjust thermostat behavior in real time. It's offered free to the industry to remove a common barrier to adoption.
KenergyAI is now working with CalNEXT to deploy multiple demonstration projects over the next six months, alongside thermostat and lighting controls partners, to make installation simple and generate real field data on performance and savings.

CSUN Connects Classroom Schedules Directly to HVAC for Energy Savings
California State University, Northridge recently integrated its classroom scheduling software with direct connections to the HVAC system using KenergyAI. The software reads a full month of class schedules on a daily basis and uses that information to control VAV units. Classrooms are pre-cooled, so they are ready when students arrive. When no classes are scheduled, deadbands are widened to reduce unnecessary conditioning and capture energy savings.
This is a software-only solution that requires only commissioning. There were no hardware retrofits or changes to existing sequences. The approach is low cost, and free projects are available. KenergyAI can implement the same schedule-driven control for most higher education facilities that already maintain classroom scheduling systems.
If you work in higher education facilities or sustainability and want to explore a similar approach, feel free to reach out or follow up for updates on upcoming projects.

AI in Building Operations: Insights from Our Talks at UC Davis (CLTC)
On August 20, KenergyAI CEO John Ko spoke at UC Davis (CLTC) on where AI in building operations stands today, and where it's headed. Thanks to Professor Jae Suk for the invitation.
Much of the AI momentum in commercial buildings runs into complex integration, high cost, or comfort complaints. Software-only platforms that work with existing systems are the exception, and they're starting to show measurable results with far less disruption. John walked through how KenergyAI's platform uses real-time occupancy data and learned patterns to adjust setpoints and deadbands during unoccupied periods, then hands control back when spaces fill up, along with Occupancy Based Thermostat Control, which extends that same approach to thermostat-only buildings.
The talk closed on where this is headed: AI eventually managing HVAC, lighting, and related systems together, factoring in occupancy, schedules, weather, and equipment behavior in real time. |
Software-only AI platforms are outperforming hardware-heavy approaches by working within existing building systems rather than replacing them. |

Occupancy-driven setpoint and deadband adjustments cut HVAC energy waste without touching equipment or core control sequences. |
|
|
The next frontier is fully coordinated AI building control, spanning HVAC, lighting, weather, and real-time performance. |
