AI Occupancy Based HVAC Controls results

Independently verified under CalNEXT.

  • 36% less HVAC electricity
  • 59.3% lower winter peak demand
  • 52.7% lower summer peak demand
  • About 1°F space temperature held within

All figures are AI Occupancy Based HVAC Controls results from CalNEXT report ET23SWE0072 (Oct 29, 2025).

Additional results

MeasureResult
Annual HVAC electricity108,124 → 68,859 kWh a year (39,265 kWh saved)
Winter daily energy47.9% drop (506 → 245 kWh)

The building

An 18,000 sq ft portable building of offices and classrooms in Carson, CA, with 34 VAV zones and two packaged heat pumps. Thin insulation and pre-existing comfort problems made it a hard test.

What we did

Standalone occupancy sensors were added, with no changes to BMS sequences. Software only, no construction.

How it was verified

CalNEXT statewide emerging-technologies program, report ET23SWE0072 (Oct 29, 2025). IPMVP Option B, energy meters on both heat pumps, KenergyAI features switched on and off weekly, about 10 months of data.

Why it matters

HVAC stopped serving empty rooms and recovered before people returned, and peak demand fell sharply. The same logic can use networked lighting controls where they already exist.
